Sunday, in repose
Today was “pack as much as possible of Haley’s stuff into the car” day. It started off with me showing up at her apartment at 7:45am, a Bodo’s Bagels breakfast in hand. Bodo’s is a Charlottesville institution, and one that I will personally miss (as will Haley, although I suspect she’ll be able to find a decent bagel or two in New York City!).
Haley had promised to have everything already packed and ready to go, and except for a few odds and ends from the kitchen which she let me take care of, and removing the legs from her desk and a shelf from the bathroom wall, she was true to her word. Thank goodness, because the humidity was pushing unbearable! We were actually done loading the vehicles before 9:30 and I headed back to the hotel for my second shower of the day 🙂
For lunch, we took Haley’s boyfriend Daniel and his best friend from London, Tom, out to eat at a place I hadn’t yet experienced, the Blue Moon Diner. Apparently a Charlottesville landmark, the Diner is a small place with a long wait for a table followed by slow service, but man oh man is it worth it! Mid-day is their brunch menu, which is mostly breakfast food plus an obligatory assortment of burgers. I had their standard French Toast. This was just one slice of bread with some fresh fruit, but I was full when I was done. Why? The “just one slice of bread” was at least an inch-thick slice of fresh cinnamon-swirl bread from the Albemarle Baking Company accompanied by the Diner’s own Vanilla-Ginger syrup. Unbelievably good!
I’ve just been lounging around the hotel since then waiting to hear where Haley wants to go for breakfast tomorrow morning. After that, I’ll drop her off at work (she’s the House Manager for Old Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia) and I’ll be packing up and heading off for Monday’s adventures in Frederick, Maryland and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
More tomorrow evening!
